He is an organic chemist who was trained at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium (PhD, 2008). After several postdoctoral experiences at world-leading institutions (Ghent University; University of Florida; Massachusetts Institute of Technology), he came back to Belgium with a rich background in organic synthesis, chemical engineering, and flow process technologies. He created the Center for Integrated Technology and Organic Synthesis (CiTOS) in 2013 at the University of Liège. Research interests at CiTOS revolve around synthetic organic chemistry but are multidisciplinary in essence and aim at (a) designing cheaper and more efficient routes for the preparation of high value-added chemicals such as active pharmaceutical ingredients; (b) accelerating the transition from petrobased to biobased strategies and (c) developing efficient processes with a lower environmental impact. Monbaliu also leads the first European Corning® Advanced-Flow™ Reactor Qualified Lab. In 2022, Monbaliu founded FloW4all, a Flow Technology Platform in Wallonia that focuses on training, technology transfer, and services for Industry. Monbaliu was the 2024 recipient of Corning’s International Prize for Outstanding Work in Continuous Flow Reactors & Chemistry.
